9th Annual Summer Unity Basketball Tournament & Resource Fair

This summer, the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) will co-sponsor the Summer Unity Celebration 2010 with and the SF Housing Authority to engage youth and residents in San Francisco’s public housing. Fun-filled and youth oriented, the Summer Unity Celebration is a series of events aimed at connecting youth and families to resources by bringing the resources literally to their front doorstep. Each event is made up of a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, a resource fair, cultural and youth performances, fun activities, and a community Bar-B-Que to encourage unity and togetherness of residents living in public housing.

Objectives for Youth and Families in Public Housing

• Enhance community building between youth and residents

• Increase coordination between city departments and CBO’s to better serve youth and families in public housing

• Connect youth and residents in public housing to services and resources

• Celebrate the diversity of public housing youth and residents through interactive and culturally empowering performances

Methodology: Empowering and Engaging Residents

The Summer of Unity is a unique effort to engage communities by going to their front doorstep, rather than having them come out. A grassroots organizing strategy is used to develop outreach and organize each event. Service providers and resident leaders in each neighborhood are identified and called upon to help coordinate the events. The events bring youth together to organize the logistics of this event. The staff conducts door-to-door outreach as well as refers local residents for event staff positions on the day of the event. Throughout the Summer Unity Celebration: Approximately 1200 public housing residents attended the event.
