SAN FRANCISCO - CityBuild
is a training program for residents, which offers
training in construction and a variety of skilled
trades. The program includes a 12-week
pre-apprenticeship that, along with training, offers
recruiting and placement services to people seeking
jobs. Some of the qualifications an individual needs to
apply to this program are: a high school diploma or GED,
proof of San Francisco Residency, Valid CA driver’s
license, U.S. citizenship, and the ability to pass drug
tests.
Recently CityBuild has started a partnership here with
APRI where information sessions are held every Wednesday
here at our learning center. During these sessions APRI
provides referrals for these qualified construction
workers and people with other trade skills to employers
in construction, which is currently with those
affiliated with the Hunters View Construction Site.
Along with these referrals, APRI also offers the means
to complete the criteria in order to be suitable for the
CityBuild program. We offer a GED course that also takes
place in the learning center, distribute San Francisco
ID’s and demonstrate how to apply for them, direct
individuals on how to get or retrieve their driver’s
license, and provides information on how to prove U.S.
citizenship and drug test protocol. APRI insures that
all of our resources are available and applicable to
session attendees.
The session is not limited to referrals for The Hunters
View Construction Site however. It also makes known
other job opportunities pertaining to a variety of trade
skills. Further, there is no restriction on who is
allowed to attend these meetings; people who are
unemployed but are experts in their trade and those that
simply want information on the steps to apply to the
CityBuild Academy are welcome to join.
Through this partnership our accomplishments are
twofold. With the referrals APRI and CityBuild provide,
the construction employers of San Francisco are able to
fulfill the requirement of hiring 20 percent of local
residents. In turn, APRI is able to further educate our
community and make certain that the 20 percent that is
hired includes those who are unjustly looked over,
regardless of their skills or capabilities. With this
partnership we at APRI become one step closer to
achieving the many aspects of our mission, one of which
is to bring economic stability and enrichment to our
community.
