ELIZABETH VALDELLON
- COMPTROLLER
When
Elizabeth came to the United States in 1996, she never
thought that she will be involved in the labor movement.
Elizabeth worked all kinds of odd jobs until she was
hired by MUNI in January, 1999. She first worked at MUNI
Human Resources and in the same year, she got hired as a
station agent. Elizabeth is now a transit supervisor for
the same transportation agency.
Elizabeth started her interest in labor when she became
a member of the A. Philip Randolph Institute. She did
voter registration in low voter turn out areas like
Bayview Hunters Point, Potrero Hills, etc. During
election, she would do early voting by taking people to
the polls, precinct walking and
Get Out The Vote (GOTV). Her work with APRI opened
Elizabeth’s eyes to the importance of educating the
community so that they know how to stand up and fight
for their rights for fair wage increase, health care and
better working conditions.
As a member of SEIU 790, she helped organize the bag
screeners at the San Francisco Airport to be unionized.
Also, she was one of the organizers at the successful
Fair Share campaign in San Diego, California. She has
also been involved in COPE campaigns as a member getting
COPE cards, gathering signatures to help fight state
budget deficit, lobbying in Sacramento and Washington DC
and even went on staff with SEIU 790 to provide
assistance to the union’s Political Department.
As an activist and a leader, Elizabeth held the
following positions for SEIU 790. She was a SF Trustee,
Recording Secretary, Chair for the Asian Pacific
Islander Caucus, Chair for the Member Organizing
Committee and the President of the Station Agent Chapter
of MUNI. She was also a member of the Citywide SEIU Tri
Local Bargaining Team (790, 250, and 535) for contract
negotiations.
Presently, Elizabeth is the Comptroller of the San
Francisco A. Philip Randolph Institute doing the day to
day financial accountabilities of the organization. She
is also the current President of the Asian Pacific
American Labor Alliance, San Francisco Chapter (APALA),
the first and only organization of Asian Pacific union
members whose aim is to empower Asian Pacific American
workers by encouraging them to join unions and obtain a
strong voice in their work places. Elizabeth is also the
Recording Secretary for the TWU Local 200. |
